Alastair started his motorsport career racing Kiwi Kidz Quarter Midgets on the North Island dirt tracks when he was only eight years of age. At his first event he received an award from rally legend Peter ‘Possum’ Bourne for the most improved driver. Alastair excelled at Auckland’s Western Springs Speedway and competed with distinction at Whangarei Speedway, Huntly Speedway, Waikaraka Park and Rosebank Park. He was a regular podium visitor and became a consistent winner in the category.
After three years of motorsport on the dirt, it was time to make the transition to circuit racing. After getting started in the Junior Restricted class, Alastair moved up to the Junior Yamaha class at age 12, where he won the Mt Wellington Kart Club Championship.
After running at the front of the field in Juniors for a season he made a smooth transition up to the Junior National class where he also won the Mt Wellington Club Championship in a Tony Kart ROK.
After assessing where he wanted his motorsport go Alastair and his father Harold purchased a MBA 125cc shifter kart which. After racing the shifter kart for only 12 months, Alastair ran to second in the 2006 City of Sails Two Day Challenge and started to look towards a future racing in single seaters.
After winning the NZ Speedspor Scholarshipin July 2006, Alastair went on to complete a highly successful season with Dennis Martin and Sabre Motorsport. Alastair started his season by being the only scholarship winner to win his first ever event in the 2006 Manfeild Winter Series.
Then at his first ever Motorsport NZ National Championship event Alastair impressed everyone when he qualified on pole and took two wins at round one on the Taupo A1GP circuit. After this success the young 16 year old went on to win the ‘Rookie of the Year’ title, placing fourth in the NZ Championship as well as winning the Formula First 1 Hour Grand Prix and being awarded the Michael McHugh Memorial Trophy by the Auckland Car Club, for the outstanding ‘rookie’ race car driver of the year.
Alastair stepped up to the highly competitive Formula Ford Championship as a rookie looking to run head to head with the best. After running fifth in the Manfield Winter Series, Alastair was highly ranked as one to watch in the 2007 New Zealand Championship. Unfortunately, the series got off to a rocky start with engine and gearbox problems holding him back in the opening rounds.
But as the series progressed Alastair developed a rhythm and pace that would see him starting from the pole and finishing on the podium on numerous occasions before finally finishing fifth in the series.
Proving that his pace was no fluke and demonstrating that he had what it took to run with the front-runners, Alastair was invited by Toyota New Zealand to test a TRS Championship car at the end of the season.
Alastair made his entry into the 2008/2009 Toyota Racing Series amid a flurry of excitement with the announcement of a multi-year contract to run for the DART International team under the banner of ‘Radio Hauraki Racing’. By the mid point of the season, he could be found consistently running in the top five and often in the top three.
Podium finishes started to come his way and Alastair was showing he was capable of the pace that earned him the tag of ‘Fastman’ in the year before.
For 2010 he returns with his own ‘family’ team to the Toyota Racing Series Championship.
